2021 felt like it flashed by our eyes and ended before we could even comprehend it was here in the first place. However, 2022 will be our year to be positive, open minded, and grateful for everything that it teaches us. Now more than ever, it is important to stay mindful and in the moment. Mindful.org defines having mindfulness as: “Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” This is the year to put our mental health first! So what are some ways we can be mindful in 2022?
1. Wake Up and Practice Gratitude
Instead of grabbing your phone and scrolling through social media first thing in the morning, I challenge you to try something different. Keep a pen and notebook right next to your bed and write down three things that you are grateful for today. Also, write down one positive thing that happened yesterday to reflect. It can be as big as seeing someone at the grocery store that you missed or the snack you had on break at work. There is nothing too big or too small to be grateful for.
2. Read More
Reading in general is beneficial; however, books about mindfulness will teach you more than articles and Instagram captions. Make it your goal to read at least one book about mindfulness. You can find a list of books by Insider to help you find the perfect fit.
3. Go Outside
Trust me when I say I know it is not fun to walk around outside in the cold, but it still is important to go out for at least fifteen minutes a day. As long as conditions are safe, of course! Go for a short walk, read outside, take your kids or siblings or dogs to the park. Just breathe outside and get fresh air. You can even meditate outside and do a quick session on your phone through an app like Headspace or Calm.
4. Learn the 7 Attitudes to Practice
Rebecca Strauss, LCSW who wrote this article about the seven attitudes of mindfulness says: “Whether you are new to the practice or already maintaining a daily mindfulness routine, understanding and embracing these foundational attitudes is your power to unlock the gifts of mind, body, and the present moment.” Here are the 7 to practice (you can read more about these on her website):
- Non-judging
- Patience
- Beginner’s mind
- Trust
- Non-striving
- Acceptance
- Letting go
Feel Lighter and Brighter
This is your year to shine brighter than ever before. These last two years have been difficult for everyone, to say the very least. It is important to practice mindfulness and to practice it every day. This is a great resolution to have for yourself and to keep for the years to come!
