147 Million Steps to Success
How TTI United 1,000 Employees Through Wellness
Transforming workplace wellness from obligation into celebration
The Challenge
Corporate wellness programs often struggle with engagement and sustained participation. Four Berkshire Hathaway companies—TTI, Mouser, Sager, and XTG—needed a solution that would motivate approximately 1,000 employees to increase daily movement while fostering team spirit across geographically dispersed workforces.
The challenge was to create an inclusive, competitive experience that would appeal to employees at various fitness levels and transform workplace wellness from an individual obligation into a community celebration.
The Solution
BetterYou’s platform facilitated a month-long step challenge that organized participants into cohort-based teams, creating a perfect blend of individual achievement and collective success. The solution seamlessly integrated with various fitness trackers and wearables, allowing effortless step counting while providing real-time leaderboards, team messaging, and progress tracking features that kept engagement high throughout the challenge.
The platform’s gamification approach enabled both individual achievement recognition and team-based competition, creating multiple pathways for engagement that appealed to employees across all fitness levels. This dual approach meant competitive athletes and casual walkers alike found motivation and purpose in the challenge.
The Impact
Exceptional Engagement
With 1,000 employees actively participating and logging over 147 million steps—equivalent to circling the Earth nearly three times—the challenge achieved remarkable engagement across all divisions. This extraordinary achievement demonstrates the power of gamification and social accountability in driving meaningful behavior change at scale.
Personal Transformation
Participants dramatically improved their activity levels, with some increasing their daily steps by 200%. By achieving nearly 148 million steps collectively, participants burned an estimated 5-7 million calories while strengthening their cardiovascular systems.
Cross-Division Unity
Team-based competition created powerful accountability networks across geographically dispersed workforces, breaking down organizational silos and fostering authentic connections between divisions. This social component made sustained behavior change more likely, as peer support and friendly competition drove meaningful lifestyle modifications that extended well beyond the challenge period.
Enhanced Morale
Teams formed organically with creative names like “The Walking Dead” and “UNBEATABLE!!!”, sparking excitement and camaraderie that extended beyond the challenge into daily workplace interactions. The playful competition and shared goal created a positive cultural shift, with employees exchanging encouragement and celebrating each other’s achievements throughout the month.
